Dancing in Charlotte

You’re going out for a night on the town with some friends and they want to dance the night away. You have danced before, but you never had any formal lessons and sometimes it feels kind of awkward to move around the floor consciously trying not to look at your partner's feet the whole time.

Like so many other people, you didn’t learn to dance early on, so you never really learned properly. It doesn’t have to stay that way though. There are dance studios, bars, and clubs scattered throughout Charlotte. Some bars will have dance nights like Tuesdays at Music Factory Blvd.

La Revolucion near Charlotte’s Third Ward holds a Bachata and Salsa night. For a small $5 cover charge, you can go in and start learning some of the choreography of these Latin dances. Latin music has a smooth flow and the beats make it hard to stand still. These kinds of dance nights are great because it’s easy to watch other people dancing and imitate their movements.

You could also try a more formal dance school like the Fred Astaire Charlotte South Dance Studio, located on Camfield Street. Here they teach traditional ballroom dancing as well as the cha-cha, Mambo, Merengue, Swing and the list goes on. This is the spot to go when you want to level up your skills as a dancer in any dance style.

Live Performances and Studios

Seeing others dance, especially professionals, gives you the inspiration to try new moves on your own. It makes you want to see if you can replicate their elegance. On the stage, it can be pretty impressive to see so many people moving in sync and keeping their tempo and rhythm perfectly.

One such performance is the Great Russian Nutcracker. Moscow’s Ballet can be seen performing this Christmas classic through a live online stream. Even though you will be watching from behind a screen, you are sure to be at the edge of your seat. The elegance of their Pirouettes and their grand leaps in the air will definitely make your jaw drop. These ballerinas have been practicing all their lives for this and you can tell. Their perfection on stage clearly comes from regular and diligent practice.

After seeing the show, you will likely want to search for the closest ballet studio and enroll immediately. The Charlotte Ballet Academy fosters an expression and appreciation of dance. Here you will learn to move as the Russian ballerinas did on stage.

If it was nice to watch but you’re interested in something to a different beat, check out the Rumbao Latin Dance Company. Here they have drop-in classes on most days of the week. Mainly focusing on Salsa lessons, you can easily start off with beginner steps and quickly move into the flow and rhythm of Latin music. Before you know it, you will be swinging your partner around and people will be looking to you for advice.

Meet-Ups

Local Charlotte clubs are a superb route to improving your dancing and making new friends. The best part is that there are so many clubs to choose from. Each one will have a different dance focus and if you aren’t available to meet with that club, there is likely another club that does fit your schedule.

Charlotte Swing Dance Meetup focuses mostly on East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop styles, but on Friday nights, they get together to twist and turn the night away. Here you will find friendly faces that will help you with words of encouragement and recommendations on how to improve. They will take you under their wing and show you the ropes.

If Swing isn’t your thing, you can join the Charlotte Ballroom Dancing Meetup group. About once a month, this group gets together in formal dress and practices classic dances like the box step and foxtrot. You can even learn to Belly Dance – there is a club for that too! Don’t be so quick to dismiss any style of dance as there is a lot of strength and rhythm required. These are just some budget-friendly ways of learning to dance with others around Charlotte.

Dinner and Dancing

If you have a date coming up, this is a great excuse to bring them to an open floor night around Charlotte. It’s a really good way to break the ice early on. You will get in some laughs as you each find your rhythm and flow of the music.

You could start by heading over to the Charlotte Latin Dance Studio. Do the Bachata and Salsa class together then you have something to talk about over dinner. Another place worth trying is Lynn’s Dance Club on Tyron St. Here you both can practice the Argentine Tango. At this studio, they have weekly lessons for beginners and experienced Tango Dancers. After Tango lessons, you will want to head over to a nearby speakeasy and talk through the night. Dance opens up so many options. Quickly you realize it's food for the soul.

Your Own Personal Dance Instructor

Everyone started with little to no knowledge of dance. Even taking a few group classes around town can make a dance novice not want to pursue dance any longer. Some instructions are not always super clear and for some people getting on the dance floor can feel intimidating. Group lessons helped but it was hard to keep pace. Everyone moves so fast and it’s easy to get lost. Plus, those studios can be so pricey that it is hard to justify.

But there are a lot of other resources and places to learn the skill of a specific dance style or the simple joy of dance rhythm. Online resources like Superprof offer private dance lessons from local Charlotte instructors. These are great dancers who really want to pass along the knowledge and won’t break the bank doing so. You can choose from tons of different dance styles like Hip-Hop, Ballroom, Salsa, and many more. All you need to do is log on to Superprof and start browsing through the long list of instructors and the styles of dance they offer. You will quickly find the right one!
