The Grunge Rock Capital

The music scene is widely underrated, yet it’s a city where some of the most highly regarded rock grunge musical bands have their origins including the Foo Fighters, Peral Jam, Nirvana, and Jimi Hendrix as well as more soft introspective sounds like Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie. The Pacific Northwest city is still home to various music labels, several influential bands, and a very lively music scene that has been regarded as the “music scene of the future” by NPR’s All Songs Considered.

Seattle is known for its deep guitar-based music with grunge punk eclectic rhythms usually known as the Seattle sound. The grunge alternative rock genre and subculture emerged during the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest of the USA particularly in Seattle and its nearby neighborhoods. The distorted electric guitar sounds and the mixture of punk and heavy metal were what gave this new unique genre its edge. Instruments typical to the grunge scene were the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and introspective/angst-filled vocals.

The angst-filled lyrics were what gave this culture its vast popularity amongst the late 80s and 90s youth because it delivered listeners themes that were typically not talked about in public including abuse, neglect, social alienation, betrayal, psychological trauma, and more. Grunge was not just a cultural movement, but a sound that defined the Pacific Northwest for generations.

Yet 40+ years after the grunge inspection Seattle’s music scene still remains compelling. The scene has been going even deeper including various other sounds and instruments where the guitar is still supreme, yet brass and synthesizers are being added to the mix. It is hard to pinpoint the modern-day sound of the Emerald City, but one thing that remains the same is the notorious and unique sounds of the city’s lyrics.

Music Venues Around Town

Besides coffee, the Space Needle, and evergreen trees, Settle is also well known for the vast number of concert venues across its various neighborhoods. If it was a normal slightly overcast day in the city music aficionados could catch a concert at The Showbox near Pike Place Market features mid-level national and local the verge musical acts that are at the cusp of their big break.

A few long blocks from The Showbox and right next to the infamous Space Needle is the unmistakable Museum of Pop Culture also known as the MoPOP. The museum houses famous relics from some of Seattle’s most favored musicians from Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix and notable rock history events that have formed Seattle’s eclectic and dark music scene.

If your music tastes are all around eclectic then visiting’s Seattle’s oldest venue, The Moore Theatre is the spot to snag a seated show, while the Neptune Theatre features concerts in almost every musical genre from indie, pop, rock, punk, country, you name it. The most local and eclectic music neighborhood in Seattle though must have to be Capitol Hill. Just around the neighborhood’s hub is the Neumos, which has hosted numerous acts from rock to hip-hop. While the venue’s basement known as the Barboza features smaller, punchier bands that are local to those around the world.

Yet, the most downplayed venue in Seattle which is hands down the most Seattle-esque has to be the KEXP radio station studio. KEXP the world-renowned radio station calls Seattle home, and is housed in a studio where visitors can come in for a cup or three of craft coffee and enjoy some of the most amazing in-studio performances from local to nationally known artists. Many Seattle-lites call this their coffee home where they can work, listen to amazing acts and their interviews, and get a nice cup of jo. What is more Seattle than that!

Vintage Guitar Finds

Seattle is known for many things as you have come to read, and another one to add to the list is its love for vintage finds. All around the city’s various neighborhoods you can find a local vintage shop that caters to its own niche from fashion and home trinkets to musical instruments and vintage guitars.

If you are a true guitar musician and aficionado for vintage and unique guitars, then the Emerald City Guitars is where you’ll find your next prized instrument. Emerald City Guitars (ECG) has been established in 1996 by local Jay Boone who had worked at some of Seattle’s various guitar stores around the city in the late 70s to the early 90s.

Boone then chose to open ECG for his love of guitars and for the lack of good vintage, rare guitars, and a place where guitars could be refinished, repaired, and brought back to life. At ECG you can find any pristine refinished guitar from brands like Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, Martin, PRS, Taylor, Guild, and many other brands. But what puts Emerald City Guitars at the top of the list is its wide array of unique Japanese, European, and the US finds along with instruments that date back to the 60s and 70s.

Emerald City Guitars is just one of many local vintage guitar shops around the city, so if you don’t find what you were on the hunt for then there are 20+ more shops to find your relic.
