The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy when he became unsatisfied with the lack of control musicians had over the volume level of the harpsichord.

So performing artists such as Bartolomeo couldn’t convey the same degree of expressions with a harpsichord as other musicians could with most other instruments.

If you’re not familiar with a harpsichord it’s a keyboard instrument in which the strings are plucked, so its softness and loudness could not be varied when playing. 

This is why Bartolomeo is the one credited for switching the plucking mechanism to that of hammering in order to create the modern-day piano around 1700.

At first, it was named gravicembalo col piano e forte meaning, “soft and loud keyboard instrument” and was eventually shortened to fortepiano and lastly, just piano.

In fact, one of the oldest pianos made by Bartolomeo in 1720 is sitting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York which you can visit today!

What You’ll Learn When Taking Lessons

The most important part of learning to play the piano is learning the construction of the instrument itself.

So in your tutoring lessons, you’ll learn that the piano has over 12,000 individual parts, but the main ones would be the keyboard, the housing/lid, the hammers and strings, the damper, and lastly the pedals.

The keyboard is the most obvious part because it’s where most interaction between the piano and the pianist takes place.

A standard keyboard consists of 88 keys today, and 36 of those would be the short black keys sometimes referred to as enharmonics, sharps, or even flats.

While the white longer keys are referred to as naturals and depending on the type of piano, the housing can come in different shapes or sizes.

Now the hammers and strings are where the musical magic happens and is located inside the housing, right under the lid.

Each key is attached to a felt-covered hammer that when pressed creates a striking motion that impacts the string and of course gives out a musical note.

And when a key is released, the damper settles to catch the string and cease the vibration to prevent the sounds from bleeding together and creating uncontrolled noises.

Lastly, the pedals are located at the base of the piano that is used to create, maintain or even end specific musical notes while playing. 

So each and every part of the piano is made of materials that were selected for their strength and longevity.
