Did you know? Chicago was home to the world’s leading manufacturing company for pianos in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Not to worry if you didn’t, for surprisingly, not a lot of people do.
During the Victorian & Edwardian time, Bush & Gertz made and sold over 50,000 pianos worldwide, pretty impressive considering how long ago that actually was.
Today, the Bush Center of Music, based on 100 West Chicago Avenue, is a city landmark and serves to illustrate the importance of piano manufacturing within the city, and is a showplace for some of the earliest and latest models designed and created by Bush & Gertz.
By 1910, the city was supplying just over half of the States pianos and presently, Chicago continues to be a prominent force in the market and distribution of one of the oldest and most popular instruments in history.
