Piano Grades Explained

Typically, most European countries will have a particular grading system, yet this isn’t the case in the United States.

There are several organizations across the country, from the MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), The Piano Guild, the ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), and the MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California).

The ABRSM, an organization originally stemming from London, England, compose their grading system in eight separate categories (1-8).

A music student will have an examination at the end of each stage and they will be graded out of 100, 66 being a pass mark, 90 being a merit whilst 90 will reward a distinction.

Each of the examinations requires the student to play a piece of music as well as answer several questions. The exams get progressively harder with the student having to play complex pieces of music upon request with minimal errors to achieve the best possible grade.

There does however tend to be a broad agreement across the States that players are categorized into: elementary, intermediate, and advanced.
