Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I grew up in a very musical household. My mother's connoisseur-ship introduced me to the genius of India's legendary tenor, Mohd. Rafi. Her daily indulgence in Indian classical music, ghazals, thumris, and film music, naturally germinated my interest in music and began my journey as an artist. From there on, my training under various teachers, countless hours of listening to maestros, and my own life experiences with music, has exponentially increased my interest in music. As I continue to explore the vast terrains of music, I have experienced the magical powers of a voice. The extent of impact it can have when trained well, is mind blowing.

Through the explorations of my voice, I have come to realise my greater purpose in life. Now as a teacher, it is time to empower the next generation of singers, just like how my teachers empowered me.

What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

From a very young age, I was exposed to a variety of music at home. This laid down the right idols for me to aspire to grow into. Parallel to this, I was extremely fortunate to have learnt rightly under the tutelage of many wonderful teachers who inspired me to find my voice and become the best version of myself. I found both an unbiased listener and an extremely constructive critic in all my teachers. Their manoeuvres, methodologies, humour, and empathy in shaping young artists, immensely inspired me!

To know that, you hold the answers to certain limitations that you once faced as a student, that can be shared with others who may be experiencing the same, is incredibly motivating! As a teacher, I feel responsible to share all that I've been given, with as many artists as possible, so that they too can experience the luxury of vocal freedom!

Two artisans, who shaped my entire perspective in music - Mrs. Surekha Joshi, who walked me through Indian classical music, and Mr. Gilles Denizot, who introduced me to the grandeur and magic of western classical music. Both of their own unique methodologies and insights, has culminated in me, into the musician that I am today. It is their blessings, guidance, and trust in my artistry, that today, I can experience music in its entirety and create that experience for audiences and students across the world.

"We don't rise to the level of our expectation, we fall to the level of our training."
    -Archilochus.

How does your work help society?

Of all the types of intelligence we exercise every day, music helps us access and heal our emotions. Having music in our day to day life, can bring a multitude of positive benefits. Through my years with music, I see that music helps you develop a strong sense of yourself, helps you build your self-confidence, thereby facilitating your social skills, a safe emotional outlet, and of course, the best stress buster!

Most people don't pursue music beyond a hobby because although they are talented, they are unsatisfied with their current level of singing, lack confidence or hold a fear of judgement. In my opinion, satisfaction is the starting point to improvement. With vocal training, the results should feel rewarding, organically nudging you towards improvement. My goal as a teacher is to help you with the simplest solutions to any problem, so that you can start performing confidently as soon as possible. I've always firmly believed, 'Happiness Breeds Growth!'

If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

One name - Gilles Denizot. Words can't express the magnitude of impact he has had on my life! Since my first session with him, his mystery has invariably drawn me towards him. The vastness of knowledge and insight he brings to each class, his razor-sharp intellect and attention to detail, technical wizardry, sense of humour, infectious passion, sincerity, rather everything about him, has always left me in awe and at a loss of words. He is an ideal teacher, a true guru who dispels darkness.

Besides music, he walked me through numerous aspects that surround music but are equally important in becoming a wholesome musician. It is everything he stands for as a teacher that makes me want to become my very own unique version of myself. Undoubtedly, it is the comfort of my teacher's love and friendship coupled with his armored trust in me that empowers me to become the best version of myself.

This blooming was primed by Surekha Joshi ma'am during my budding years. She introduced the thought of appreciating one's versatility at an age when I was touristing across genres in music. She enabled my growth as a musician and never let me be constrained to one genre.

Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Innately, I'm a performer! My work on social media platforms is only a glimpse, if you want to truly experience my artistry, you must always come see me perform live!

I occasionally dabble with song writing, poetry, music production, reading, sports, etc. I've always been intrigued by acting, and may tap into it sometime soon! Currently, fitness is my new obsession. After all, singing is an athletic sport, isn't it? (laughs)

Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Let the magic of stories unfold in our sessions. It is best, when narrated in person over a cup of coffee perhaps?
