About the lesson

I have been teaching since 2004 and have an Ed.M in TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have taught in the U.S.A. and abroad. I am fluent in Spanish and am also a published writer. I have taught students of all levels and ages.

I teach English online to both native and non-native speakers.

English Language Learners:

- I teach speaking, listening, pronunciation/intonation, vocabulary, and writing classes.

- Classes are completely tailored to students' needs and goals.

- I provide detailed feedback after every class.

- In conversation classes, we focus on fluency, accuracy, and comfort and confidence when speaking English. We also work on pronunciation and intonation.

- Students have the option of supplementing these classes with online interactive lessons.

- In writing classes, we use Skype and Google Docs to look at and correct your writing together. We work on sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.

- For students interested in intensive classes with reading, listening, writing, vocabulary, and grammar exercises, I provide all the materials.

- I also offer classes to help you prepare for job interviews, which include templates to help you organize your answers to potential interview questions, enabling you to feel confident and calm.

- My classes are also fun, as this is such an important part of language learning!

- Classes are taught 3 days a week, (Mondays through Wednesdays). Rates for private students:

--- Conversation Classes:
$40 / 1 hour
$30 / 45 minutes
$20 / half hour

--- Writing Classes: $45 / 1 hour

--- Intensive Classes: $50 / 1 hour

--- Interview Preparation: $45 / 1 hour

    1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

    This is my first language.

  • 02

    2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I can't, because I don't think any language or culture can or should be represented by a single person or character, whether real or fictional. There is such tremendous diversity within every language and culture.

  • 03

    3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

There are a lot! One is: Don't judge a book by its cover. Aside from being a language teacher, I'm also a writer, and in the process of publishing my books, I've learned just how much people do judge books by their covers! But I also really love the (non-literal) meaning of the idiom: Don't base your opinion on someone by the way they look.

  • 04

    4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Well, it's my first language, and I think there is always a connection to one's mother tongue. In terms of helping my students, English has become the international language in many fields, and being able to use it opens doors to many opportunities.

  • 05

    5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I think a challenge for a lot of students is connected and reduced speech, that is, how the words get connected, and which sounds sometimes get cut off when we speak. Students sometimes think that their challenges in understanding spoken English or in being understood are due to a lack of vocabulary. But sometimes it's just about understanding how spoken English is different from written English. I think learning the "rules" (there are always exceptions, of course), to connected and reduced speech can help a lot!

  • 06

    6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

My second language is Spanish. I studied it in school, but when I moved to Spain, it sounded NOTHING like the textbook Spanish I'd learned. Plus, I'd only had one teacher from Spain, so the accents I was used to were completely different. I felt really uncomfortable making mistakes and asking people to repeat themselves, so I decided I wouldn't speak until my Spanish was perfect. So of course, that meant I barely spoke! For two months! Then one day I was just tired of being silent. So I started to speak. I made a ton of mistakes, but I learned: the only way to learn how to speak a language is to speak it! (Of course!) And 99% of the time, people are very supportive of language learners.

  • 07

    7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travel helped me gain a much better understanding of how different the same language can be in different countries. I'd lived in Spain for two years by the time I went to Mexico. For the first two weeks in Mexico, I was a bit lost until I got used to the different accent, vocabulary, etc. And even though English is my native language, there were definitely moments in Scotland when I had to ask people to repeat themselves several times. But as I love to hear different accents, sometimes I'd ask people questions I already knew the answers to, just to hear their accents! 🙂

  • 08

    8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I've been teaching for 18 years. I still have a blast in class with my students. I'm not just a language teacher, but also a language learner. And I love helping my students achieve their goals and make their dreams come true!
